I know what you might be thinking. Why on earth would anyone make press-on toenails? Aren’t they a little freaky? But hear me out, press-on toenails could be the most fun beauty product since colored graphic eyeliners and they could be your new obsession.
Truth be told, I’m not a nail art connoisseur. I prefer my nails trimmed to teeny-tiny nubs. Since I’m kind of careless (I’m a scatterbrained Gemini sun) and have extremely sweaty hands, having my nails designed feels like being shackled. I worry too much about accidentally scratching my butthole or my coochie with long nails. I feel bad when my nail polish gets chipped off too soon. Sure, I get my nails painted on occasion and had a nail stickers phase as a kid, but it’s not something I can commit to every day.
However, I am now a nail convert. I got hold of press-on toenails and it’s my new favorite thing. Press-on nails are fake plastic nails that are coated with either acrylic or gel on top and backed by adhesive or glue. Of course, they come in various designs. Mine had a lot of glitter and stick-on pearls and gems.
I’ll let you in on a not-so-secret secret: I love my feet…okay, I think nice feet are cool in general. Another thing I’m all for is a no-hassle hack. Press-on toenails are exactly the kind of slightly odd goodie that impresses without the stress.
How to apply
What I got was Kiss New York’s Press & Go Toe Nails kit which includes a nail file and 24 toenail tips. If you’re not familiar with how press-on nails are applied, let me guide you through the steps.
First, you prep your nails by clipping them short and cleaning them. You can use rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball for this. Make sure that you also remove your nail polish beforehand.
Next, you can check to see which press-on nails fit your nails best. You can also clip and file the press-on nails to better match your nail shape and size. The ones I got were even easier to clip than my actual nails.
Then, it’s time to apply the nails. Remove the plastic covering the adhesive and align the piece with your nail bed. Press firmly for 10 to 20 seconds and voilà! The nails can last up to two weeks if you’re careful to mind your toes.
The verdict
The product gets a big yay from me. It’s easy and quick to apply. You can customize its shape and design. There are clear press-ons that you can paint over and personalize however you want. Best of all, it doesn’t damage your natural nails.
