Sound the alarms, ring all the bells: Jackson Wang has just released his latest single.
A collab between the Chinese rapper and singer and the collective Internet Money, “Drive You Home” is an ‘80s inspired love song in English, with Wang crooning about how much he doesn’t want to break up with his beau. “I don’t wanna go home, no way / Without you / Ain’t gonna be good for my health / And every roadmap leads straight to your heart / So I can’t leave you tonight,” he sings.
If you’re a fan of new wave bands (or, I guess, like me, you have karaoke-obsessed parents that love playing the songs from their youth), the song might sound a li’l familiar to you. It samples “Drive” by The Cars, which has the same narrative as Wang’s “Drive You Home.” They share the same hook: “Who’s gonna drive you home?”
Wang also scripted, directed, and produced the music video (we love a multi-hyphenate). It shows the aftermath of a car crash, with Wang surviving the accident but his girlfriend dying in his arms. It’s also played in reverse, and we don’t see the cause of the crash until the very end.
Spoiler alert: I have a new driving accident PSA slogan to add to “don’t drink and drive” and “there’s no next if you text”: PDA can kill, y’all.
I’m personally loving Wang’s ‘80s phase. His previous release, “LMLY,” which he released in March, is also ‘80s-inspired. Its music video showed him working at a pretty funky diner. I’m wondering now if there’s anything stitching together the two videos. A Jackson Wang Cinematic Universe, if you will.
