Ria Recommends: Christmas Gifts for Friends Who Have Everything

Christmas gifts don’t always need to be brand new. They can be old, scratched, and stained like an Ifugao warrior helmet showing off its battle scars. Or it can be a 1964 watercolor painting by National Artist Vicente Manansala.

Vintage or not, you can take your pick of the treasures being offered this Saturday, as Salcedo Auctions holds Under the Tree. They’ll start with an affordable art and design auction at 10 a.m. At 5 p.m., a selection of 76 rare pieces of art, jewelry, timepieces, décor, collectibles, and automobiles will go under the hammer.

For jewelry lovers, there’s the 23.75 Colombian emerald set in white gold and diamonds, which can be worn as a pendant or a brooch. There is also a pair of fan-shaped open work diamond pendant earrings and two glittering pairs of black diamonds to wear to your holiday parties.

For the masculine set, there are timepieces from Hublot, F.P Journe, Panerai, and Vacheron Constantin. Vintage watches will also be up for grabs, like a Rolex “Prince” from the 1940s and an early Patek Philippe Calatrava from the ’50s. The highlight of the men’s category, however, is a Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 5712, presented in two-tone white and rose gold.

Art aficionados may bid for valuable artifacts that date back to the 17th century, or for artworks made by maestros Vicente Manansala, Fernando Zóbel, and Alfonso Ossorio. Highlights of the event are an intricate mirrored Art Deco silver centerpiece, a vintage mother of pearl fork and knife set, and a Fabergé ‘Imperial Egg’ collection of fine bone china. The auction will end with a meticulously restored Bentley 8 and a Mercedes Benz SL.

Stores may always have great gifts, but giving someone a rare piece layered with history and novelty can make it more meaningful. If you can’t think of anyone to give it to, just think that you, too, deserve a present.

Salcedo Auctions’ Under the Tree will be on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 10 a.m. onwards at Three Salcedo Place, Tordesillas Street, Makati City. For more information, visit their website.
