Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz Wins the First Olympic Medal for the Philippines in 20 Years

While this side of the world was sleeping, Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won a silver medal in the Rio Olympics.

Hidilyn lifted a total weight of 200 kilograms in this year’s Women’s 53 kg weightlifting category, 12 kilograms behind Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Shu-Ching. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Yoon Jin-hee won the bronze medal. This is Hidilyn’s third time to compete in the Olympics. In a short video, she tells Inquirer that she was only expecting a bronze medal and feels blessed to have won.

Her win also ends the Philippines’ 20-year Olympic medal drought, so this is a big thing. And we hope our other athletes are doing just as well during the games. For now, congratulations, Hidilyn!
