Amid the ongoing scrutiny of Sen. Leila De Lima, Malacañang has called on trolls to stop sending her threats via text.
In a press briefing, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar urged supporters of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte to stop bombarding Leila with texts and calls. “For the supporters of our President, let us be responsible with what we are texting. It’s not good to threaten our own. Of course, Senator De Lima is our senator. She’s an elected official of the land,” he says.
Yesterday, De Lima addressed the same issue, saying that she received nearly 2,000 anonymous texts and calls last Tuesday. “[The texts and calls were] threatening me, harassing me, calling me the vilest of names,” the senator said. This happened after the House of Representatives allowed to disclose De Lima’s cellphone number and home address during a televised hearing.
Meanwhile, Andanar also assured that they are providing ample security to protect Leila. “Everyone is assured. We’re all Filipinos, we’re all citizens of this beloved country. All Filipinos have the right to be given security by the police and the military.”
It’s bad enough that Sen. De Lima is undergoing an investigation and being ridiculed on social media. But to invade her privacy and threaten her safety? That is way below the belt.
