France has decided and named independent candidate Emmanuel Macron as its new president, beating his opponent Marine Le Pen from the far-right.
The country’s youngest president since Napoleon gave a somber speech after the announcement. He thanked his supporters for the trust and addressed issues such as fighting the division that undermine France and Europe. Compared to Le Pen who favored closed borders and use of local currency, Macron is a strong supporter of the European Union and has even talked about working on Brexit negotiations.
“I will defend Europe; it is our civilization which is at stake… I will work to rebuild ties between Europe and its citizens,” Macron said during his victory speech.
The newly elected president celebrated his win at the world-famous Louvre Museum surrounded with supporters waving the French flag. “Thank you for fighting with courage and perseverance for so many months,” he said as he stood in front of the glass pyramid. “You’ve won. France has won.”
