Meet the 14-Year-Old Filipina Included in the ‘TIME’ Most Influential Teens of 2017 List

When you’re 14 years old, you’re expected to study and play with your friends. But this high school student protested against the Marcos burial and is now included in TIME’s 30 Most Influential Teens of 2017 list.

Meet Shibby De Guzman, a St. Scholastica’s College student. During the height of the Marcos burial protests, her photo went viral on social media. This is also why PCOO Asec. Mocha Uson spread the fake rumor that the school brainwashed the students to protest against the burial and the Duterte administration.

Because of this, Shibby was attacked by online trolls but she said in a previous interview that she doesn’t let it affect her and what she’s fighting for. “If you know what you want for your country and you know what you’re fighting for, then you wouldn’t think about it as harassment towards you.”

TIME’s Joseph Hincks praised Shibby’s bravery to stand up against the injustices that’s happening today, which also includes the war on drugs. She also told the magazine how important it is for the younger generation to speak up. “It’s so important that [they] know their own rights and when authorities abuse them. There are values that aren’t up for debate.”

Shibby now joins other influential women from St. Scholastica’s College like former president Cory Aquino and Sen. Risa Hontiveros. Congratulations on this milestone, Shibby. We hope you don’t stop fighting the good fight.
