Have you ever wondered about the other planets in our solar system? Especially the largest one, Jupiter? If you’ve been following Mission Juno, you’ll know that NASA is trying to explore the planet as best they can. Launched in August 2011, the spacecraft arrived at Jupiter on July 2016. Since then, they have been able to take photos and share them on Instagram. Their most recent posts show close-up photos of the red spot, Jupiter’s atmosphere, and even a storm. If you’ve seen these photos, you’ll know that they look just like artworks you could hang in your home. We even tried to compare some of the images to existing paintings and digital works below.
Geode Slice #2 (orange) by Jessalyn Haggenjos
This photo taken on Oct. 24, 2017 shows Jupiter’s Northern hemisphere. It’s a color-enhanced photo that shows the Jovian clouds in different blue hues. This looks similar to painting done by Jessalyn Haggenjos of a geode for its colors and swirl effect.
Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh
NASA also shared an image of a storm in the Jovian atmosphere. This reminded us of Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. It has the same color palette and almost identical movement patterns.
Lebensbaum by Gustav Klimt
The turbulent Jovian clouds have a mix of warm and cool colors blending into one another. And the swirl patterns are even more noticeable in this photo. It almost looks like this painting from Gustav Klimt, which depicts a swirling tree.
Digital work by Andrew Herdon
Have you ever seen a close-up shot of Jupiter’s red spot? Well NASA was able to share one on Instagram and looks comparable to this digital work by artist Andrew Herdon.
