Despite trying to show their support for #MeToo and #TimesUp, this year’s Grammys was still a male-dominated awards show. According to Nylon, Grammys president Neil Portnow believes that women need to “step up” to win awards. Please tell me this is a joke.
Neil spoke to Variety about #GrammysSoMale explaining, “It has to begin with… women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level… [They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome.”
Come on, these women do work hard. They were good enough to be nominated. Yes, Lorde was nominated for Album of the Year but wasn’t offered to perform. SZA was the female artist who was nominated for the most awards but was snubbed.
It might be time for the Recording Academy to reconsider how they choose their winners. What do you think?
