Sometimes, Age Really Is Just a Number

The other day, my boyfriend Vince brought up how people are still shocked that I’m seven years younger than him. Most people just assume we’re the same age or I’m at least in my mid to late 20s. But no, I’m 23 and working at my first job out of college.

When we met, I was still in college and had one year left in university. I had a few months off school because of the calendar shift so I had a lot of free time. I was interning for Scout at the time and would hang out with Vince pretty much every day after work.

I didn’t know how old he was at first, I just knew he was older because of our mutual friends. Not gonna lie, I was a little shocked when I found out he was 27 then but in the end it didn’t really matter. We got along really well and, although we sat in comfortable silence a lot, we also had great conversations.

It isn’t so much the age difference that was a struggle but what “life stage” we were in separately. I was still in school and had strict parents so there weren certain things I couldn’t do like stay out late all the time. I was also trying to figure out what I wanted to do after I graduated while he had a steady job and flow of income. Despite that, we were still able to help each other out. I’d offer some advice when he had problems and he agreed to be part of my FGD for my thesis. It was a win-win situation. I’ve also learned so much from him like how to deal with work problems, balancing all the aspects of my life, and being more sociable.

Fast forward to today, I realized that we both made adjustments to make our relationship work. We were both patient but in different ways. He didn’t complain during the times we couldn’t see each other and I learned to give him space because it’s important to him.

We’re hitting our three-year mark in a few months and every day we’re learning more about each other, working on our relationship, and have fun. As Vince once said, “It’s nice to have your relationship figured out,” and I’m glad we do.
