There’s always new music popping up left and right. Some from established artists we already love as well as from those up and coming. As much as we enjoy fresh tracks, it’s also fun to reminisce the old ones. Like the songs and albums we would put on repeat in high school or college. For 2018, there are many albums turning 10 years old. From pop tracks to auto-tuned voices, 2008 was an interesting year for music. Today, let’s travel back in time and listen to the songs we heard on the radio and saw on MTV.
“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” by Beyoncé
Beyoncé has accomplished a lot in the past decade like giving birth to three children and setting new performance standards with #Becychella. Before all of these, however, she was already making music we all fell in love with like “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” from her 2008 album I am… Sasha Fierce.
Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends by Coldplay
Last year, Coldplay went on an Asian tour and I remember everyone freaking out. Because they were coming to Manila and because of how expensive the tickets were. Some even flew to neighboring countries because it was more affordable. Fans might already know this but their album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends was released on June 2008. Songs included in this project were “Viva la Vida” and “Life in Technicolor.”
“Chasing Pavements” by Adele
I distinctly remember a lot of people singing Adele’s “Chasing Pavements” in high school. It was also part of the soundtrack of Wild Child. Yes, that movie where Emma Roberts played a spoiled rich kid who moves to a boarding school. This song was released as part of the album 19 where “Set Fire to the Rain” and “Rumor Has It” were also included.
808 and Heartbreak by Kanye West
Kanye West’s sound has changed a lot through the years and you can hear that from his album 808 and Heartbreak. Released in November 2008, this was the artist’s fourth studio album. Coming from his past albums Late Registration and The College Dropout, the tracks in 808 and Heartbreak are more electronic. He also used auto-tune for his verses.
“Pokerface” by Lady Gaga
Artist and ‘gay icon’ Lady Gaga’s music has become anthems for the LGBTQ+ community. In August 2008, she launched her debut studio album The Fame. The music on this album were more pop and dance compared to her more recent works. The Fame had a lot of popular songs like “Paparazzi” and “Just Dance,” but “Poker Face” was probably the most memorable.
“Love Story” by Taylor Swift
Before the tea was spilt, Taylor Swift didn’t have that much drama surrounding her. In 2008 she was dating Joe Jonas and released her second album Fearless. At that time, her sound was more country and focused on love stories. Other tracks included “Fifteen,” “Hey Stephen,” and “White Horse.”
