Childbirth is such a curious concept. Women are miracle workers not just for bringing new life into the world, but for her ability to survive the painful process, which leaves most of us—especially men who will never experience it—wonder how it would really feel like. Well, now it’s possible.
Invented in China, the labor pain simulator was reportedly created as a response to overwhelming complaints by expectant mothers’ on how their partners rarely empathize with them.
The device makes use of shockpads attached to men’s abdomen to simulate the pain of contraction, which can be adjusted from an intensity of 1 to 10.
In a Hospital in Hangzhou, China, it can be used for free by willing participants. Hospital technicians who work the simulation shared that most men who tried can barely make it to intensity 7, and would shout for it to stop even before the five-minute session was up.
Check out this hilarious video of two men who voluntarily tried the simulator, with their wives beside them.
One of them compared the experience to “someone taking a saw and just carving up my abdomen,”
The experience at least revealed a newfound level of appreciation and respect for their wives and mothers, as one of them claimed: “Mom, if anything that I just experienced is anywhere close to what I did to you all those years ago, I’m sorry, you’re like a superhero. You’re one tough momma.”
The Try Guys also simulated childbirth. Watch below to find out if they were able to make it to intensity 10:
While the simulator offers some insight on what childbirth feels like, it still can’t fully grasp the actual experience. The participants of the session are mostly soon-to-be dads who want to show support for their wives, though there are also cases of men who tried it just for the thrill of it. While others see this as an eye-opening tool for men. For writer Barbara Ellen, the whole experience is a mockery of childbirth, and one that undermines the process by making it seem like an extreme sport or a joke.
