The hacker behind Jennifer Lawrence’s leaked nudes got a surprisingly lenient sentence

Remember the notorious “The Fappening” where several Hollywood celebrities’ private photos were leaked online? Jennifer Lawrence was among the Hollywood A-listers who fell victim to the incident. Four years since the incident happened, the hacker responsible for leaking her nude photos finally got his sentence. While it might seem justice was finally served, the light sentencing isn’t exactly a cause for celebration

26-year-old George Garofano, the person responsible for hacking the private Apple iCloud accounts of nearly 250 people, was sentenced to only eight months in jail after pleading guilty and admitting to spending around 18 months scheming the crime. Those targeted allegedly included Rihanna and Cara Delevingne.

The prosecution wrote, “Not only did Mr. Garofano keep for himself the photographs he stole, he disseminated them to other individuals. He may have also sold them to others to earn ‘extra income’.”

On his part, Garofano claims he has matured since he committed the crime during his college years. “He now stands before the court having matured, accepting responsibility for his actions and having not been in trouble with the law since,” his defense attorney wrote. “There is nothing to suggest that he would ever engage in this or any other criminal conduct in the future.”

The other three hackers connected to the crime have only been sentenced to between nine and 18 months in prison too, despite the fact that the photos will forever be present online, and their actions have caused irreparable emotional trauma to victims. Previously, months after The Fappening, Jennifer Lawrence told Vanity Fair, “It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime. It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change.”
