Romance dramas always get us in the feels, especially if the plot is relatable to some extent. Personally, what draws me into these films is the journey from the key characters’ meet-up to the clincher near the end. You just can’t help but look back at what they went through before kicking you in the gut with some sort of plot twist—it’s exactly like that with A Star Is Born.
At the same time, it’s also fascinating to see musicians do the same with emotional music videos. Like, think of a two-hour film being condensed into a three-minute video (sometimes longer) but you still feel the tears streaming down your face. December Avenue and Moira Dela Torre, for example, made it to YouTube Philippines’ trending page with “Kung Di Rin Lang Ikaw” because of that heartbreaking element.

“Tagpuan” by Moira Dela Torre
Many of us know that this is the music video where Moira Dela Torre got engaged. But before you get to that bit, you’ll see flashes of a little girl crying and a dysfunctional family. Moira has mentioned before that this song tackles several aspects in her life, like her father leaving them when she was younger and how she eventually found her safe place.
“1-800-273-8255” by Logic featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid
When rapper Logic would perform this live, it was always emotional because he had suicide survivors stand with him on stage as he performed. This music video shows the story of a black teenage boy who’s trying to figure out his sexual orientation and dealing with an abusive home. It will make you feel everything in just seven minutes.
“F**kin’ Perfect” by P!nk
(TRIGGER WARNING: This video has gruesome scenes of suicide so watch at your own risk.) “F**kin’ Perfect” was controversial when it came out because of how it depicted depression and suicide. Pink explained in an open letter that she wanted to start a conversation and that this is her way of showing people, especially her unborn child at the time, that she accepts them for who they are. I don’t personally agree with how she framed that scene, but I can’t deny how powerful and moving it was to see how the woman in the video grew up and excelled amid her personal struggles.
“I Know You Care” by Ellie Goulding
Technically, this is a movie scene montage set to Ellie Goulding’s “I Know You Care.” But whether you’ve seen Now Is Good, which is a film about a cancer-stricken girl, or you could just feel the lyrics, you can feel your heart clench a bit. I mean, who doesn’t tear up at the sight of a girl battling cancer and trying to live life?
“Ever Enough” by A Rocket to the Moon
“Ever Enough” basically has a “am I doing enough in this relationship” message, which could already resonate with people who are going through a rocky relationship. The music video features a couple where the young woman (played by Debby Ryan before Insatiable) escaped from a hospital, and they go on a cross-country trip. Throughout the video, you see her boyfriend buying her medication and watching over her, then it flashes to them getting married in Las Vegas. Again, it’s the typical “live life to the fullest” type of plot and you’re just waiting for it to get sadder toward the end.
