Welcome to another series of stories on Preen.ph called “Best of.” Every last day of the month we will be breaking down the best of, well, anything. These will cover different categories like culture and fashion. We will get into specifics like best new liquid lipsticks or restaurants for lunch breaks. For the first edition of “Best of,” I will be listing some TV shows and movies that came out in January. The entries here are based on personal opinion but also popularity through my social circles and, of course, social media. If a TV series or movie is popping, people are bound to tweet or post on their IG Stories about it. I mean, how else are we supposed to get recommendations from our peers?
Animated: Carmen Sandiego
I’m always on the lookout for new animated TV shows. Seriously, guys, you’ll be surprised at how good they can get. Recently, there have been many reboots including Carmen Sandiego. This is based on the ‘90s cartoon Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego. In the 2019 version of the show, we get a detailed backstory on Carmen, how she became a thief, and why she wears red. There is no shortage of interesting characters, my favorite is this girl who uses origami as a weapon. Oh, and there’s a huge twist at the end that had me saying, “WTF.” And plus points for having a strong female lead too.
Competition: RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 4
In case you’ve been living under a rock, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars is back for season 4. There is also a teaser for season 11, but let’s not focus on that just yet. With new episodes every Friday—Saturday in the Philippines—this season is one to watch. These queens are fighting so hard for their legacy by showing their skills in comedy, fashion, shade-throwing, and of course lipsyncing. I’m really rooting for Naomi Smalls so far, how about you?
Documentary: Fyre
A lot of us have already forgotten about the disaster that was Fyre Festival, but Netflix and Jerry Media wanted to shed some light on this issue again. Aside from everything we also witnessed on social media, we get an in-depth timeline of what really went down. You’ll get to see how much of a manipulative person co-founder Billy McFarland really was. This documentary made use of social media posts, interviews with festival-goers and staff, and behind the scenes footage taken by the Fyre team. As an avid festival attendee, it pains me to see how everything went up in flames.
Superhero: Glass
Glass is the third and final installment of M. Night Shyamalan’s comic book-thriller series of movies. First, was Unbreakable which came out in 2000 and Split which debuted in 2016. I’m sure you remember James McAvoy’s eerie yet wonderful performance. What Glass does is tie the three main characters together. As the story progresses, you start to understand how they’re all connected. Trust me, the big reveal will seriously shock you. And James returns with his many personalities who are all fighting for the light.
Comedy-drama: Sex Education
Sex Education was one of the easiest shows to binge watch this month. On the surface, it comes off as a comedy but it is much more than that. Of course, they touch on sex and issues like discrimination towards the LGBT community, and women being treated as objects. This is also took me back to my high school days but then I realized it was nothing like this show at all. I did not have any schoolmates going around and posing as a sex therapist.
