Musician Gabriella Wilson, widely known as H.E.R., bagged two Grammy Awards of the five she was nominate in: Best R&B Album for H.E.R., and Best R&B Performance for her duet with Daniel Caesar on “Best Part.”
“I’m speechless right now. I’m holding back tears,” the half-Filipina California native said in her acceptance speech. “I really want to say thank you to God, first and foremost, and my parents, who are in the building right now, and my sister. Mom, dad, this is for all the sacrifices that you made for me and thank you for embracing my talents and who I am since I was a little girl.”
Though she tries to keep her background low-key, she did reveal in an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden that her love for music was partly thanks to her father being a musician and her mother being Filipino. “I’m half Filipino and Filipinos love karaoke,” she said. “So yeah, I love to sing, I’ve always been around music my entire life and I just gravitated towards instruments.”
Another female singer who made history in the Grammys stage is Camila Cabello. Her fiery performance of her hit song “Havana” made her the first Latina to open for the awards show.
Undeniably, the awards show is far from perfect, but we are here for this celebration of diversity and women in the Grammys this year. Congrats, H.E.R and Camila!
