The Academy Awards has just ended. While you were busy oggling the stars’ dresses and suits, some of you might have missed their accessories, a part of their look that’s more crucial than most may realize. What made this year exciting is, we noticed a lot of the accessories worn were too significant to be ignored, as some of them practically defined certain stars’ whole red carpet look. Read on to see what we’re talking about.
Lady Gaga’s Tiffany diamond
Lady Gaga has been channeling female Hollywood icons in her red carpet appearances lately. For the Oscars, she went with Audrey Hepburn. She donned a classic black dress reminiscent of the one Audrey wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But the real star of her ensemble was the 128.54-carat Tiffany & Co. diamond, aka “the Tiffany diamond.” After Mrs. Sheldon Whitehouse who wore the necklace at the 1957 Tiffany Ball, and Audrey who wore it in 1962 for publicity posters for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Lady Gaga was only the third person in history to wear it. NBD. Oh, and it reportedly cost around $30 million today—a significant sum, especially if you compare it to the budget of their 2018 film A Star is Born, which was $36 million.
Jason Momoa’s scrunchie
Scrunchies are back but to see them on the Oscars red carpet—worn by Jason Momoa, no less—was def something else. The actor stood out in his pink velvet Fendi suit created by the late Karl Lagerfeld, which matched his wife Lisa Bonet’s pink gown. But if you think his wife’s look was what influenced his choice of suit, you’re wrong. It turns out, his whole ensemble was actually based off of his scrunchie. He’s known to always wear one on his wrist, but this in particular was a pink velvet one from Fendi. On Instagram, he also highlighted his statement rings, which he revealed he got from Instagram artists.
Awkwafina’s clutch-slash-flask
Leave it to Awkwafina to show us how to liven up the red carpet. We love her ensemble, but her clutch didn’t fail to catch our attention too. Look closely and you’d find it actually doubles as a flask. She was even caught on camera casually talking with reporters at the red carpet while taking a sip or two of tequilaá la 2018 Rihanna and her bracelet flask at Coachella.
The versatile accessory undoubtedly provided her with some liquid courage, since it was her first time presenting at the Oscars, but also kept her stylish as it complimented her shiny, metallic pantsuit.
Rachel Weisz’s head clips
Rachel Weisz’s Oscars look certainly turned heads. Her red Givenchy dress featuring a shiny latex caplet made her look like a fierce dominatrix and it was everything. But certainly the accessory completed the look. At first glance it would seem she’s wearing a diamond headband. Her hairstylist, Mark Townsend, revealed on Instagram, that it was actually two antique Cartier hair pins from 1903. “The timeless Cartier hair pins were on a clear wire so I used a whopping 50 pins to secure it to her hair,” he said. “The best part? None of the pins are exposed because I lifted the hair behind her ears and all the pins are laying flat under the hair near the nape of the neck.” A lot of work, but decidedly worth it.
Regina King’s earrings
Regina King became talk of the town for her Best Supporting Actress win. It was her first Oscar nomination, and her overwhelmed reaction as it was announced she beat out strong competitors Amy Adams, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone, was priceless. She may not have been prepared for the award, but she definitely looked ready. Zoom in on her Chopard earrings. If you think they’re familiar, that’s because it’s actually the same one Priyanka Chopra wore to her wedding to Nick Jonas last year.
Spike Lee’s necklace
The renowned director’s colorful outfit at the 91st Academy Awards was practically impossible to be missed. He wore an all-purple outfit comprised of an Ozwald Boateng suit, purple hat, and glasses, as a show of tribute to his close friend, the late musician Prince. He completed it with a custom-made gold, diamond and opal necklace made by jewelry designer Amedeo Scognamiglio which features the symbol Prince adopted as his name. Another notable accessory was the love hate rings he wore, which were inspired by his movie, Do the Right Thing.
Danai Gurira’s headpiece
Another actress with a strong head accessory game was Black Panther actress Danai Gurira. She complimented her gold damask empire-waist dress with a headpiece which sit perfectly on her long braids styled by Larry Sims. The accessory is reportedly a one-of-a-kind, antique Victorian headband from Fred Leighton that’s unsurprisingly quite expensive. Her gold and diamond bracelet, and Victorian drop earrings and diamond and gold rings completed her red carpet look.
