The Oscars nomination for the film “Green Book” was already surrounded by controversy, so its win for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture was a shocking move by the Academy.
A film based on the friendship between African-American classical pianist Donald Shirley (Best Supporting Actor Mahershala Ali) and his Italian-American driver, Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), Green Book has been accused of stretching the facts and promoting a harmful “white savior” narrative. Not to mention, its director, Peter Farrelly, was known for flashing his penis on set of his past films as a joke, something which he has since apologized for.
The film overall is understandably seen as problematic, and netizens are visibly dismayed over the news of its win on Twitter.
