Moira Dela Torre and Jason Hernandez on why marriage is a good thing

“Some people view marriage as ‘game over.’ But actually, God’s purpose for marriage is expansion,” said Jason Hernandez roughly a month after getting married to his best friend Moira Dela Torre.

It’s refreshing and admittedly quite surprising to hear a young couple speak of their marriage with so much confidence. There’s a maturity in the way they moved and the way they talked when we were shooting. Moira and Jason are sweeter to each other now, a lot more touchy, but not cloying—not at all awkward.

If you’re on social media or at least watch the news, then you know their story from start to finish. They were college best friends, each other’s confidante and even wingman. Then one day, it just clicked, it all aligned, at the time that both were ready. A year or so into their relationship, Jason and Moira knew it was time to get married—just about the time her career started taking off.

“A lot of people have this misconception that when you get married young, it means you plan to leave your career and settle down,” said Moira. “The question I’ve been asked the most after getting married was, ‘Magbe-baby agad kayo?’ (Are you gonna have a baby already?) and ‘Paano work mo?’ (What about your work?)” In case you’re curious, yes, Moira and Jason plan to have a baby, but not anytime soon. They agreed to take the time to focus on each other’s careers, to travel the world, and ultimately, to enjoy each other’s company. The babies? It can wait and it’ll happen.

When asked about their biggest adjustment, all they could think of was a funny story about their sleeping habits. “Moi is a really light sleeper,” Jason said. “Sometimes in the middle of the night, I’d slip out quietly to use the washroom. The next thing I know, she’s already sitting up asking me where I’m going.” “He sets an alarm every five minutes,” Moira quipped. It happens for a full hour in the morning and that’s something she’s not quite used to yet.

On a serious note though, they’re really enjoying this new life, this new season. “It’s been the greatest month of my life yet,” she excitedly said. “For the last 10 years, I have been living independently, always figuring things out on my own. Prior to that, I’m the eldest to two sets of siblings and so I’ve learned to initiate and take care of everybody all the time.” Moira has two sisters who are based in Olongapo while her other two sisters and younger brother are based in Las Vegas.

“Only now do I know how it feels like to be taken care of.” Cue: Awwwwwww.

Jason views it almost the same way, “It’s the most fun I’ve had in my life! Being the bunso (the youngest child), things are always out of my control since I lived with my parents. They’d always say, ‘our house, our rules.’ So this is the first time that I am the king of my own castle,” he laughed. “So I am in a phase where I am enjoying this newfound freedom with my best friend.”

In between layouts and Nintendo Switch breaks, Jason would share stories. “We laugh a lot. We have this humor that only the two of us can understand and it’s very special. When we’re caught on camera, we probably just look high or crazy,” he laughed again. “Moi is the funniest person I know!”

Before you wonder if they get into fights, of course they do. Like any other couple out there. “It’s still an everyday struggle because both of us, of course, because our nature is still flawed,” Jason shared. “That’s why we constantly have to remind one another lovingly when one of us is acting up. This is what usually causes our mini fights, because pride still gets in the way.”

But they also don’t let things simmer and last long. “At the end of the day, when emotions calm down, our hearts remain to obey God and honor each other.”

There are so many things that they will go through together, in both their careers and personal life. But we know they’re gonna be alright, most especially when Jason said, “I realized that since we got married, Moi and I are really stronger together.”

And that’s how we believed in love again. Kidding. We now realize that yes, marriage is a good thing—and no age can stop that.
