Media censorship isn’t a new concept. However, government-controlled news is something that should be abolished. In the Philippines, we have seen how news outlets are fighting to survive the government’s takedown of the truth.
This happened when Maria Ressa, CEO of Rappler, was arrested back in February and again a few days ago. Clearly, the government will stop at nothing. Because of this, journalists and other Filipinos are trying to #DefendPressFreedom. That hashtag has been going around on social media with people adding their insight to the situation.
Rappler went a step further and created this video featuring “journalists from the martial law period all the way to today’s campus reporters stand up to demonstrate the Philippines’ enduring commitment to the defense of press freedom.”
These people share how they have done their job under dictators, through gunfire, and covered stories from all over the country. Listen to what they have to say so you can understand how the freedom of the press can benefit everyone in society.
