Just last week, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said the Senate is finally open to discuss absolute divorce bill in our country.
“Pag-usapan natin, tingnan natin kung ito (divorce) ay mas magandang version ng annulment, at hindi naman makakasagasa sa mga panuntunan ng simbahan at mga ibang relihiyon, open tayo sa mga panukala nila,” Sotto said in an interview on dzMM. (Let’s talk about divorce and whether it’s a better version of annulment. If it doesn’t go against the rules of the Church and other religions, we’re open to it.) “Talagang very debatable pero panahon na sigurong pag-usapan,” he added. (It’s really very debatable and maybe it’s time we talk about it.)
We definitely think a serious discussion about the matter is needed. So it’s great to see that just this morning, Sen. Risa Hontiveros filed a bill which seeks to allow absolute divorce in the country, and is now awaiting to be assigned a number.
According to Inquirer.net, “Sen. Hontiveros says that she values the sanctity of marriage, but she also supports women who want to leave abusive relationships; a significant number suffer domestic violence and physical abuse.”
