It was 2008. Most of us were still in school and a lot of our peers were talking about one thing: the “Twilight” saga.
In case you were living under a rock, Stephenie Meyer’s four-part series the “Twilight” saga captured young girls’ hearts from 2005 to 2008. It’s a love story between Bella Swan, who is a human, and the vampire Edward Cullen. Throughout all the books, the characters go through several challenges—from evil vampires chasing after them to Bella being stuck in a love triangle with a werewolf.
While we were all worrying about school, Bella couldn’t even pick between a vampire and a werewolf. Just regular teenager problems in Forks, Washington, I guess.
The craze continued when the first movie starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson premiered in 2008. Although many didn’t like it (read: made fun of it), “Twilight” is still iconic and it’s undeniably part of a lot of people’s adolescence.
Recently, the “Twilight” hype was reignited after Netflix Philippines added all five movies to its library. Social media was suddenly filled with old-time fans who can still recite the quotes and listen to the bomb soundtrack. (Seriously, listen to the “Twilight” OST.)
Meanwhile, we looked back on the fashion trends that came out because fans wanted to look like certain characters. Remember: This was back in 2008 (11 years ago OMG) and as much as we want ’00s trends to come back, some of us still cringe at our past choices.
Of course, that’s not going to stop us. If you need a reminder of the trends that became big because of the “Twilight” saga, keep reading.
Plaid shirts of different colors
When “Twilight” came out, these pieces were often associated with Bella because she wore several of them over tank tops. (I guess this explains why I dressed like this in high school. Sigh.) Syfy theorizes that Bella’s fashion sense mirrors her dad’s, who also wears a lot plaid, because he raised her alone.
Prom dress with sneakers
This style was more practical than trendy because Bella did have a broken leg during her prom. Still, the sight of Bella wearing a blue dress and Converse sneakers while slow-dancing with Edward was stuck to fans’ memories. And maybe inspired teenagers to ditch their heels during prom season.
Also to be fair, Bella didn’t start this trend in the ’00s. “A Cinderella Story” starring Hillary Duff did it first with the pink Chuck Taylors.
Gloomy gray outfits
Majority of the movies are set during gloomy seasons because 1) Forks is a rainy town and 2) the Cullens only come out when the sun isn’t out. To go with the dim setting and the vampire family’s mysterious vibe, the Cullens wore grays all the time. The only other color you’ll see is blue and that’s about it.
Red or gold contacts
If fans wanted to dress like a “Twilight” vampire for Halloween, they would get either golden (Cullens) or red (Volturi) contact lenses. The brave ones would even wear these while doing everyday errands.
#TeamEdward and #TeamJacob shirts
We see you, diehard fans. We know you have at least one #TeamEdward or #TeamJacob merch, and even got into arguments with others over who deserves Bella more. Don’t worry, we won’t judge you.
