Makati kidnap victim is reportedly back home, but police aren’t sure

Here’s an update on the Dec. 9 Makati kidnapping: Police said the victim, a woman named Zhou Mei, has already returned home to her husband—but it’s not actually confirmed yet.

Major Gideon Ines Jr., Makati City police investigation chief, said in a DZMM interview, “Nakauwi na po sa kanilang bahay. Sa ngayon po, sabi ng asawa niya po nagtext sa akin nakauwi na raw siya kahapon ng umaga.” (The woman is back home. As of now, her husband texted me saying she came home yesterday morning.)

The husband, who was identified as Chen Tangbin, was previously seen as a person of interest in the abduction of Zhou. Ines told reporters last Dec. 13 that Chen was “suspiciously silent” when asked who might have kidnapped his wife. He also noted that “Chen did not seem eager to find his wife.”

Police also suspected that Zhou may have known her captors, saying that eyewitnesses saw her casually boarding the white van. She allegedly started screaming when the suspects stopped her from getting off the vehicle. Shortly after the incident was reported (and made rounds on social media), the police revealed documents and ID allegedly dropped by Zhou and the suspects, as well as reports of ransom money being demanded.

After receiving news that the Zhou was home, Ines admitted that he’s not sure if it’s true because he hasn’t seen the woman. He also claimed that security guards saw her enter her condominium and her name was on the logbook.

Meanwhile, reports have come out that the four suspects have fled the country and returned to China on Dec. 12, three days after Zhou’s abduction.

The whole situation is kind of sketchy, but we hope Zhou is really home safe. We also want to remind everyone to continue being vigilant and to stay safe while walking on the street.
