Earlier today, NCR Police Chief Major General Debold Sinas announced that two cops from the Marikina police special operations unit are facing criminal charges for allegedly raping two female detainees.
According to Inquirer.net, Sinas identified the uniformed personnel as patrolman Arnold Geroyang and patrolman Sonny Maruzo who were both arrested by a fellow police officer.
The female detainees were initially brought to the Marikina police station on Mar. 19 for drug charges. They were then transferred to the custodial facility where they reported the incident to the police officer who alerted their chief of police.
Sinas declared that both officers are already detained at the same facility as the women. He expressed disappointment at their hard-headed officials who still find the guts to commit such immoral acts. “It is just frustrating that in spite everything meron pa kaming pasaway na pulis. We put this out para malaman ng lahat na we don’t tolerate [it],” he said.
Given the situation, the Marikina police should consider detaining the alleged rapists in a different facility. Confining both parties in the same site may potentially trigger the emotional trauma of rape survivors. Imagine sleeping under the same roof as your assaulter.
Educating policeman on how they should properly treat detainees must be a priority. Putting them behind bars isn’t enough, they need to know and understand that what they did was wrong.
