Aside from iPhone releases, one piece of tech news that we love are emoji updates. Sadly, we probably won’t have a new set until 2021 because of the pandemic.
The Unicode Consortium said in a statement that they’ll be delaying the announcement of the next batch of emojis until fall next year. “Under the current circumstances we’ve heard that our contributors have a lot on their plates at the moment and decided it was it the best interests of our volunteers and the organizations that depend on the standard to push out our release date,” said Mark Davis, president of the Consortium.
The organization usually approves new emoji sets months or a year before they’re rolled out in iOS and Android devices. Last January, the Unicode Consortium announced 117 new emojis which include the transgender flag and boba tea. These will be released later this year as part of the Emoji 13.0 rollout, so at least we still have something to look forward to.
Since we have to wait for more than a year for new emojis, can we make some suggestions? Like, maybe add other LGBT flags, a black cat, the Korean finger heart, a glass of white wine and more skin tone options. We also won’t be surprised if someone will make a virus-like emoji in light of recent events. Too soon?
