Do you remember when Kiera Cass’ global bestseller “The Selection” first came out in 2012 and we were hoping for a movie adaptation that never happened? (Thanks for getting our hopes up, Warner Bros.) Well this time, it’s finally confirmed! Last Saturday, April 11, Netflix took to Twitter to share the news that they are actually turning the five-book series into a Netflix original movie, with Haifaa Al-Mansour, who directed “Mary Shelley” and “The Perfect Candidate” as the director. This movie will be produced by Denise Di Novi, who produced “Little Women,” and Pouya Shahbazian, who produced and managed Divergent.”
Finally, after eight long years, I get to actually hear Maxon say “break my heart, break it a thousand times if you like, it was only ever yours to break anyway” and I already know that it’s going to hurt just as much as the first time I read it (and all the other times I’ve re-read that line).
Though the book might’ve been cliché, unforgivably cheesy and loaded with cringeworthy moments, you can’t deny that it was once one of those books you couldn’t just put down. It probably even managed to break your young adolescent heart into a thousand pieces. Remember that part when Maxon couldn’t get down on one knee but his speech had all of us in tears?
Besides being excited for the movie itself (Netflix, I know you have a bad rep with book-to-movie adaptations but please don’t ruin this one for us), I’m also excited to see the cast because, for eight years, all I had to go off of was whatever passed as imagination for your run-of-the-mill teenage dirtbag (me).
Also, please pick someone else other than Noah Centineo.
