Science fiction fans and Timothée Chalamet stans rejoice! Vanity Fair (VF) released a first look into the desert planet Arrakis and its warring houses as imagined in the latest movie adaptation of Frank Herbert’s enduring space saga “Dune.”
The film directed by “Arrival” and “Blade Runner 2049” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is set to be released on Dec. 18, 2020. That’s not too long of a wait and just in time to give us another Chalamet movie for the holidays. Our fave Oscar-nominated young actor plays the noble heir Paul Atreides who is set to embark on a mystic journey as he is looked to as a possible messiah of a planet at war because of a “spice” called melange.
Chalamet told VF what drew him to the character. “The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” he says. In a preview, we see Paul in a dark ensemble that gives us a brooding and mysterious vibe and is hopefully keeping him warm in the film set built in remote regions outside Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
Villeneuve is turning “Dune” into a two-part epic so the upcoming movie will only cover half of the story. It’s once been regarded as an impossible task to turn it into an effective film. “I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie. The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details,” the director said.
This means we’ll get more of its star-studded cast so we’re not complaining. The film will also star Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Rebecca Ferguson.
We don’t know a lot about Zendaya’s character, Chani. While she’s a main love interest in the first book (no spoilers!), we don’t know what her role in the movie is just yet. She’s simply described as “a mystery woman who haunts Paul in his dreams as a vision with glowing blue eyes.” Are we getting a possible romance? We can’t wait to find out. More Zendaya, please!
