‘Buy Bust’ director Erik Matti thinks K-dramas are untimely

We all know how K-dramas have been in almost everyone’s watchlist ever since the enhanced community quarantine was implemented. But it seems like not everyone is on board with this idea. Director Erik Matti, for instance, had a few things to say about them.

In a tweet, the “Buy Bust” director criticized these series, calling them “[f]aux cinderella stories with belofied actors whiter than white.” He also pointed out how these shows “are all about love” despite the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

This was met with a lot of replies from netizens who thought that there’s a lot more to K-dramas than just a “shallow” plot.  They pointed out that there are series that tackle social issues like class, gender and race.

Some people commented that watching K-dramas has become their form of escapism, adding that they watch it for  “pure entertainment,” despite being “shallow.”

As of writing, we’ve reached out to Matti (to explain the reason/context behind the tweet) who has yet to reply.
