Almost two years since it confirmed that they’re working on the third installment to the “Legally Blonde” movies series, MGM has chosen Mindy Kaling (show creator of “The Mindy Project” and “Never Have I Ever”) and Dan Goor (co-creator of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) to do its screenplay. Reese Witherspoon said the decision is #ElleWoodsApproved in an Instagram post.
In a Deadline exclusive published in 2018, MGM announced that Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah the screenwriting duo who wrote the screenplay of the first film, were back on board, although the first draft they wrote was allegedly dropped. The film also has most of the original creative team signed on. Original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will be joined by Elle Woods herself—besides reprising her role, Witherspoon will also produce under her company, Hello Sunshine. You can tell that the actress is ecstatic about this from a video of her in a hot pink bikini she posted when she first broke the news to her fans.
“Legally Blonde 3” will be the second time Kaling and Goor will be co-writing a screenplay. The pair have their hands full between this and a comedy about an Indian wedding that will star Priyanka Chopra and Kaling.
Last year, Witherspoon revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the film will be, “So much fun. So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals. It will have returning cast members.” Yes, that last line means more Jennifer Coolidge as Paulette. Change of script or not, we know that we’ll be getting what we’re promised. We won’t accept any less than what we deserve. We learned that from Atty. Woods.
