With her “Where Do We Go?” tour postponed, Billie Eilish releases a short film called “Not My Responsibility” (originally shown in the concerts) which slams both body shaming and judgmental behavior.
In the video, we see Eilish strip away her clothing while emphasizing the phrases: “my music,” “my body” and “my clothes.” She mentions how these things always tend to be the subject of unwarranted criticism. Eilish then proceeds to question societal norms: “Would you like me to be smaller? Weaker? Softer? Taller? Would you like me to be quiet? Do my shoulders provoke you?” she asks.
“We make assumptions about people based on their size. We decide who they are. We decide what they’re worth,” she adds. Her statements all challenge the toxic nature of entitlement to criticize women, especially those in the public eye.
Ever since she rose to fame back when she was 15, a lot of people have been commenting on her fashion choices. According to Teen Vogue, Eilish revealed that she purposefully chooses to wear baggy clothes so that people wouldn’t have an opinion on what her body looks like.
She saves the most hard-hitting questions for the end of the video: “If I wear more, if I wear less—who decides what that makes me? What does that mean? Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”
