Get educated and learn more about Filipino trans representation at this Zoom talk

Good news to all the brainiacs out there: Susan Stryker, one of the leading figures in trans and queer studies, will be having a virtual talk this Jun. 4 hosted by Bellas Artes Projects via Zoom.

It’s part of their Eskwela project, an “alternative arts school” or “education intervention program [that] aims to gather and teach anyone who wants to study the arts, whether the participants already have a background on it or not.” Originally held at the Bellas Artes Outpost in Makati, the classes made the move to online to “prioritize the safety and well-being of our community.”

For her talk, Stryker will be discussing Christine Jorgensen, a trans woman performer who grew to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s, “to explore the relationship between embodiment and image-making.” While Jorgensen was an American figure, legendary local film studio Sampaguita Pictures had signed her on for a movie. “Touring the Pacific during the 1960s as an entertainer, she spent several months in Manila performing at the Safari Club and also made a special appearance in the 1962 Filipino feature film ‘Kaming Mga Talyada.’”

Moderating the lecture will be Jaya Jacobo, a professor from Ateneo de Manila University who teaches literature, queer theory and transgender studies. She’s also one of the co-editors of “Trans Pilipinas: An Anthology by Trans and Gender Diverse Filipinos,” a new anthology of writings spotlighting the voices of trans Filipino folx.

To join the talk, which will start at 1 p.m., you need to register through this sheet first to receive the Zoom meeting details.

Aside from Stryker, other key speakers lined up for June are visual artist Jonathas de Andrade who will be discussing context-responsive art practice and art historian Isobel Whitelegg who will be discussing “curatorial delirium.”
