With the charged political climate these past few months, a number of Filipinos are looking forward to exercising their right to vote. However, first-time registrants will have to wait a little longer. The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) announced that the suspension of voter registration will be extended until Aug. 31. “The resumption of the continuing system of voter registration, including satellite registration, will remain suspended in all COMELEC offices nationwide.”
COMELEC announced the previous extension scheduled to last until Jun.30 with a press release where COMELEC executive director Bartolome J. Sinocruz Jr. stated that the suspension of all voter registration activities was approved “in light of the extension of the implementation of the Enhanced Community Quarantine until May 15 in select areas in the country.” If COMELEC reveals that the reason behind the decision is still the quarantine restrictions, this would be the fourth suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As early as Mar. 9, registration activities have already been halted.
