The age of TikTok and K-pop dance cover videos has breathed a new life into dance culture. It’s inevitable to watch someone grooving on your timeline these days and we’re fairly sure that the internet omnipresence of dance has been inspiring for many who wish to carve their own path in the industry. On Aug. 28 at 2 p.m., the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is streaming its choreographers’ competition for solo and duet form called “Wifibody.” It’s a must-watch for anyone dreaming of being a professional dancer.
“Wifibody” is the first tier of the CCP Choreographers Series, a three-part program in support of Filipino choreographers. Under the direction of dance legend Myra Beltran, the competition this year “explores the virtual body in the time of COVID-19.” According to CCP, the finalists are exploring how the limitations of current circumstances can actually deepen the choreographic process.
The finalists were chosen through online video auditions and the stream will feature their 6 to 10-minute performances. Each of them was mentored by seasoned choreographers Beltran, Denisa Reyes and Raul Alcoseba. They also received the help of filmmakers Sherad Sanchez and Ruello Lozendo in translating a live dance encounter to video.
Here is the list of Wifibody’s finalists, in case you want to check out their previous work before D-Day:
