Among Taylor Swift’s most iconic songs is “Love Story” from her 2008 Grammy award-winning album “Fearless.” Today, fans can get a taste of the track’s re-record by, get this, watching a commercial.
Swift wrote in a tweet on Dec. 2: “Okay so while my new re-records are NOT done, my friend @VancityReynolds asked me if he could use a snippet of one for a LOLsome commercial he wrote so…here’s a sneak peek of Love Story! Working hard to get the music to you soon!!”
For those who might be out of the loop on Swift’s efforts to regain ownership of her music from her first six albums (from her self-titled debut to “Reputation”), she’s been re-recording her old masters so she can legally play them live again and stop Scooter Braun from further profiting off her work.
So what’s this Ryan Reynolds commercial that has one of our all-time favorites as its soundtrack? Written by Reynolds under his production company Maximum Effort, the commercial is for the dating app Match. In the video, we see Satan finally getting a match on the app. He goes to meet the gal in a picturesque park. “Twozero-twozero?” he asks. She replies, “Please. Call me 2020.” It’s a match made in hell.
We get to see a montage of their dates with “Love Story” playing in the background. The pair are enjoying a bunch of things that we didn’t get to enjoy this year and creating a bit of havoc. They’re having a picnic in the middle of an empty baseball field. They’re at the gym, at the cinema and stealing toilet paper in public bathrooms. Satan says before asteroids hit the city, “I just don’t want this year to end.”
Yes, 2020 has been a hell year. Since it’s nobody’s year (except maybe for billionaires whose obscene wealth grew under the pandemic), Reynolds’ advice is to try our luck next year. Well, there’s no time like the holidays to start hoping that things would get better in 2021.
