Exo’s Xiumin in ‘Hadestown’—please make it happen

Whenever two of our greatest passions collide—K-pop and musical theater—it’s always the best thing that has ever happened to us. No cap. Jo Kwon in “Priscilla”? Shinee’s Key in “Bonnie & Clyde”? Seventeen’s DK in “Xcalibur”? These are just some of our fave musical theater performances from idols. Today, we’re told that we might have another one to look forward to in the possible casting of Exo’s Xiumin in “Hadestown.”

According to TV Daily today, April 22, Xiumin was offered a lead role in the Korean premiere of “Hadestown.” The show is scheduled to debut in August at the LG Art Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

Of course with Exo preparing for its comeback this year, Xiumin will have his hands full if he takes on the role of Orpheus. In case you have yet to watch “Hadestown,” it intertwines two Greek myths—the tragic love story of Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as the messy marriage between Hades and Persephone. You might know Orpheus as the guy who couldn’t help but look back at his S/O before leaving the land of the dead when he was specifically told not to. RIP to him but we’re different.

The Broadway production bagged eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 2019. Orpheus’s big song “Wait For Me” is one of the biggest highlights of the show (and a possible litmus test for those who are deciding if they want to check it out). The original cast also stars half-Filpino Eva Noblezada and we wouldn’t be opposed to seeing another Filipina star opposite Xiumin, too.

“Hadestown” wouldn’t be Xiumin’s first appearance in a stage musical if he says yes. He previously appeared in the South Korean army musical “Return,” which he and Shinee’s Onew took part in during their service.

Our fingers are crossed. Please make it happen and let us stream it when it comes out.
