Attention, horror film fiends! There’s a couple of new scream queens in town. It may come as a delicious surprise to you that “Euphoria’s” Hunter Schafer and Gemma Chan are joining the cast of indie horror flick “Cuckoo.” While Chan is leading the cast alongside the legendary John Malkovich, we’re hoping that Schafer will also play a big part. Who’s to say she can’t still be a final girl?
According to Deadline, production is set to begin in April 2022 and Neon is keeping most of the details under wraps. What we do know is that German writer and director Tilman Singer is at the helm. Singer made his directorial debut with the slightly-experimental supernatural horror film “Luz,” which won film festival awards in Berlin and Milan. Some critics have likened Singer to Dario Argento (“Suspiria”) and David Lynch (“Mulholland Drive”). Bringing his “Luz” team back together for “Cuckoo,” the upcoming film is expected to be one hell of a trip.
Also joining the cast are Sofia Boutella (“Atomic Blonde”), Jan Bluthardt, Zita Hanrot and Proschat Madani. I like my horror films with a strong roster of actresses and this one looks like it will deliver.
With “Parasite” and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” among Neon’s films, the movie also seems to be in good hands. We haven’t had a horror flick win an Oscar Best Picture since “Get Out” and this film might just be in the running to be the next one.
What are you hoping to see in the film?
