It should go without saying that while National Women’s Month is a great time to reaffirm our engagement in the continued fight for women’s rights, celebrating women should be a year-round affair. Project Space Pilipinas puts its money where its mouth is by dedicating its entire year to programs for women artists and cultural workers. Want to support this initiative? Project Space Pilipinas, or PSP, is an independent artist-run initiative and platform based in Lucban, Quezon. In celebration of Women’s Month, the art space shared in a March 2 post, “We at Project Space Pilipinas are pleased to announce that all our programs in 2022, which include exhibitions, collaborations, residencies, and public engagements, will all be dedicated to women artists, art professionals and cultural workers.”
PSP also revealed today that it will be hosting Jessica Dorizac’s “Decorative Disposition” and Maria Lourdes Abulencia’s “Paglaya” at its tangent space called Project Room. Both solo exhibitions will open on March 5 at 3 p.m. and will run until March 29.
Dorizac’s sculptural art objects such as wooden stools, mirrors, and cardboard cutouts have been featured in contemporary galleries and art spaces such as Artinformal, The Drawing Room, and Futur:st
Writer, actress, dancer, and painter Abulencia, on the other hand, is known for her work in the healing arts. She is the founder of the Liwanag Institute of Ritual Arts and co-founder of the Quezon-based Kuta ng Sining, a province-wide organization of artists and culture advocates. Her recent works have been featured in Quezon art spaces such as PSP and Obien Gallery.
Want to know more about the upcoming exhibitions? You’ll have to wait for the unveiling just like the rest of us. In the meantime, we’re reflecting on the continuous need for initiatives like PSP’s that feature the work of women artists. Like in most industries, women in the art world still contend with pay gap and a disparity in professional opportunities. For centuries, women have inspired and created art. I think we can all agree that it’s high time that women in art are respected and not simply capitalized on.
