Misha Collins says he’s straight after accidentally coming out as bisexual

It may be 2022, but today’s string of eyebrow-raising Hollywood news is bringing us back to the golden age of 2012 Tumblr.

On one hand, there’s Lea Michele casually sharing in the “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known” documentary that she showed Jonathan Groff her whole vagina once as an anatomy lesson. Just bestie things! Then, there’s Misha Collins (famously known as banished-to-Super-Hell Castiel in the queerbait show “Supernatural”) coming out as straight.

It’s almost like we’ve come full circle from when Pink said the memeable quote, “I’m gay… Actually, I’m not.” A growing number of celebs have actually been coming out as straight in the 2010s. A sign of the times, right?

Collins’s case is just a li’l different because his admission to being straight was part of an apology. Here’s what happened: Speaking at Creation Entertainment’s Supernatural Official Convention in New Jersey on April 23, he appeared to come out when he asked the crowd, “By show of force, how many of you would consider yourself introverts? How many extroverts? And how many bisexuals?” After the crowd cheered, Collins added with a nonchalant wave of his hand, “I’m all three.”

In the days that followed, the video went viral and fans who took the stage banter as the actor’s bisexual coming out started congratulating him.

Collins took to Twitter today, April 26, to apologize and set the record straight.

“I want to deeply apologize for misspeaking this weekend. At a fan convention in New Jersey, when I was talking with the audience I said that I was ‘all three’ things: an introvert, an extrovert and a bisexual,” he wrote.

“My clumsy intention was to wave off actually discussing my sexuality, but I badly fumbled that and understand that was seen as me coming out as bisexual. This was not my intention so I need to correct the record: I am not bisexual. I happen to be straight, but I am also a fierce ally and the last thing I want to do is falsely co-opt the struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community.”

There’s been a number of funny posts on this oopsie, ranging from Jaboukie Young-White turning it into a copypasta of sorts and people joking that it’s proof that real people can queerbait, too. Some believe maybe Collins meant to say ambivert instead of bisexual since it felt like it came out of nowhere, but others argue that maybe that was the not-well-thought-out punchline he was going for.

Whatever the case, it’s nice that Collins has shown genuine remorse. But considering how long the “Supernatural” fandom was starved for actual queer representation and have endured what the Mary Sue has called casual homophobia at the show’s conventions, maybe the cast should make an effort to ease off on the LGBTQIA+ pandering. Anyway, were we able to confirm that Collins is an ambivert?
