“Parang kailan lang tayo’y magkasama,” Sarah Geronimo wrote on her Instagram post yesterday, announcing her surprise new music’s release date.
Written by Jin Chan of Waybttr, who also wrote P-pop boy group Alamat’s “Say You Love Me,” the new single “Dati-Dati” is dripping with yearning and nostalgia, with a persona longing to go back to the past. “Dati-dati, ating mga nakaraan,” Geronimo sings. “Ano ba ang mga paraan ’pang maranasan ang mga araw tulad ng dati-dati?”
It’s a fitting theme for Geronimo’s comeback, really. This is the first time the singer has released new music since 2018 album “This 15 Me,” which at the time marked her 15th year in the industry. (Technically, she released a new single in 2020 with “Tagu-Taguan,” but it was from that same album.) Though we don’t have any information yet about what the rest of the era is going to be like—we don’t even have the name of an album yet—we hope it’ll follow that same introspective, “folklore”-esque theme Taylor Swift has been exploring the last two years—if the visuals are anything to go by.
In the promo photo, Geronimo is seen sporting long, wavy curls and a billowy floral dress. It’s giving romantic modern princess energy if truth be told. If this is the direction of her new era, I’m eating up what she’s serving.
The song is also produced by international music producers Su Ganade and Dylan Graham, the latter having been dubbed by Variety as its “Hitmaker of the month” in April 2022 for his R&B tracks, specifically Muni Long’s “Hrs and Hrs.”
Can we expect something equally sultry to come from this era as well? It is, after all, Geronimo’s first release (again, barring “Tagu-Taguan”) after her marriage to Matteo Guidicelli. It wouldn’t be surprising if she took on a more mature sound frankly.
