In this month’s V Magazine, cover girl Lana Del Rey finally addresses the infamous quote that earned her the description of being “anti-feminist.”
The one-on-one interview was conducted by the equally controversial James Franco. In it, Lana says, “The luxury we have as a younger generation is being able to figure out where we want to go from here, which is why I’ve said things like, ‘I don’t focus on feminism, I focus on the future.” She further explains, “It’s not to say that there’s not more to do in that area. I’ve gotten to witness through history the evolution of so many movements and now, I’m standing at the forefront of new technological movements. I’m not undermining other issues. But I feel like that’s obvious, like I shouldn’t even have to bring that up.”
The quote may have its valid points but it has certainly not appeased still enraged audiences. Though Lana has a point in saying that when it comes to equality among the sexes, she “shouldn’t even have to bring that up,” how can Lana “focus on the future” when society is still stuck in some ideals that have already faded out?
In July 2014, Lana Del Rey came under fire in an interview with The Fader wherein she said that “feminism was not an interesting concept.” The issue was fueled further by the passive attitudes to male violence found in her second album, Ultraviolence.
Currently, the singer-songwriter is promoting her latest album, Honeymoon, having recently released the video for “High by the Beach.”
