Five Actors of Color Just Dominated the Screen Actors Guild Awards

The recently concluded Screen Actors Guild Awards 2016 just gave the Academy Awards a lesson in diversity as #SAGSoBlack dominated both the ceremony and social media.

Actor Idris Elba, who won awards for Best Supporting Actor for Beasts of No Nation and Best Actor In a Movie or Miniseries for Luther, took a jab at the ongoing #OscarsSoWhite controversy while he was presenting an award, saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to diverse TV.”

Meanwhile, Best Actress winner for the drama series How to Get Away With Murder, Viola Davis also chimed in on the issue during her acceptance speech, saying that “Diversity is not a trending topic.”

Actresses Queen Latifah and Uzo Aduba also went home with awards for Best Actress for the HBO film Bessie and Best Actress for the comedy series Orange Is the New Black, respectively.

Props to the Screen Actors Guild for recognizing diversity! Maybe they can teach a thing or two to the production team of a certain TV movie about Michael Jackson.
