Winona Ryder Admits Being Scared When She Got the ‘Stranger Things’ Role

In Stranger Things, Winona Ryder plays a very frantic mother looking for her lost son. But on her first Nylon cover story, she admits that getting the role was a little daunting for her.

In the interview with the magazine, she says that the pace of TV shows scared her because she’s used to acting on film. But Stranger Things director Ross Duffer says that Winona “brought this wild energy to the character, this frenetic quality.”

Director Matt Duffer also echoes this sentiment, saying that Winona’s transformation for the role sometimes scared them. “We did not expect the intensity she brought to the role.”

Winona’s role also involved a lot of hysterical crying every episode. How did she do it? “If you put your hands up, you feel vulnerable. It’s the little things. I learned that from Jennifer Jason Leigh when I was just starting out,” she shares.

Maybe that’s why she’s doing so well on her first TV role. Who knows? She might even star in more shows. I mean, she’s already lined up to make a cameo in Author: The JT LeRoy Story, so we’re expecting more projects from her.
