Dawson’s Creek and Fringe actor Joshua Jackson recently visited the fishermen at Apo Island here in the Philippines. What he found out from the locals is a huge eye-opener on the effects of climate change in our country.
A clip from National Geographic’s Years of Living Dangerously shows the local fishermen Senan and Jorie free-diving so they can spear fish for their livelihood. Unfortunately, no fish can be found and you can see that the corals are in bad condition as well. This results to not having anything to eat for the day.
“Does that happen a lot?” Joshua asks the fishermen as they share a meal of canned sardines. They answer, “Three days out of a week.”
It’s difficult seeing these locals living near the coast and how they can’t even provide food nowadays. Senan even admits that some of his kids left the island to look for better opportunities because there are no more fish. But there’s still a glint of hope from Senan as he lists down what he wants in the future.
“For my family…to be able to eat three times a day, that [Jorie] gets to finish school. That’s enough,” Senan says.
