Amber Heard Speaks Up About Domestic Abuse in Emotional PSA

Amber Heard releases a PSA on domestic violence months after her divorce battle with Johnny Depp.

In a video for International Elimination of Violence Towards Woman Day, an emotional Amber recounts the time she was being physically abused by her ex-husband. “How is this happening to me? I’m strong, I’m smart, I’m not a victim,” she says.

Amber goes on to say how there’s a stigma surrounding victims of domestic violence. “I guess there is a lot of shame attached to that…label, of victim,” she says. “It happens to so many women. When it happens in your home, behind closed doors [and] with someone you love, it’s not that straightforward. If a stranger did this, it would be a no-brainer.”

Last May, Amber filed for divorce from Johnny due to irreconcilable differences and accusations of domestic abuse after 15 months of marriage. Once it was done, Amber split the $7-million divorce settlement to two organizations, one for victims of abuse.

At the end of the video, Amber offered advice to women, telling them to choose themselves and call for help if needed. “If I hadn’t had a few people that I really trust around me, a few women, a few friends… If I hadn’t had them around, how different my life would be.”

We’re proud of you, Amber. Go and keep women empowered and educate people on domestic abuse.
