What’s the Big Deal About Emma Watson’s Topless Photo?

Emma Watson doesn’t understand why people are fussing over her boobs on Vanity Fair’s new issue. We don’t get it either.

Last week, Vanity Fair posted one of Emma’s photos where she’s wearing a revealing Burberry top. This launched a heated discussion among netizens about Emma’s role as a feminist.

In an interview with Reuters, Emma addressed the hateful comments, including those who were saying that she wasn’t a feminist for showing her breasts. “Feminism is about giving women choice, feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality,” she says. “I don’t really know what my tits have to do with it.”

Emma is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador since 2014. She also started the “He for She” campaign which encourages boys to support gender equality.

Meanwhile, Nylon points out that this is also a hypocritical move on Emma’s part. In a 2014 interview with Wanderland MagazineEmma questioned Beyoncé’s feminist status because of her revealing videos. “As I was watching [the videos] I felt very conflicted, I felt her message felt very conflicted in the sense that on the one hand she is putting herself in a category of a feminist, but then the camera, it felt very male, such a male voyeuristic experience of her.”

This also brings up the issue that black women are often excluded in the discussion of feminism.

It’s been three years since that interview, so maybe Emma has learned better.  Either way, this doesn’t give people the right to shame her for this topless shoot. She looks beautiful and self-empowered. No woman should feel afraid of being sexualized and ashamed of their bodies.
