Sofia Coppola is Making Her Opera Debut

After her win for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, Sofia Coppola is set to make her opera directing debut. The opera performance she directed for the big screen is Guiseppe Verdi’s La Traviata.” As seen in the trailer, we can expect nothing less than a grand performance.

Sofia has also teamed up with Valentino for the costumes used in the opera. It took the designer 800 hours to make the black and teal gown seen in the opening scenes of the trailer. According to The New York Times, creative director of Maison Valentino Pierpaolo Piccoli said “We sought to create a big picture as though it were a painting because in the end what is impressive about opera is the grandiosity of the stage, so we wanted to dress all these people on stage as if they [are] part of one whole.”

La Traviata is scheduled to premiere in the UK on July 9
