Maine Mendoza‘s stardom began the moment she played the role of Yaya Dub, alongside Alden Richards, in 2015. After two years, everyone has seen the good and the harsh reactions within the AlDub fandom. Most of the time, it could get ugly too. This is why Maine wrote an open letter to her fans to address this issue and the real score between her and Alden.
In a post, Maine first expressed her gratitude for the fans who’ve supported her since day one. “When I was new in the business, you all came to my life and loved me for exactly the way I am. Hindi ko kinailangang magpanggap para mahalin niyo,” (I didn’t have to pretend for you to love me) she said.
She then addressed that she feels misunderstood and invalidated because of how some fans have treated her. “I feel like I live in a box. I have not been able to do what I want and say what I feel because every time I try to express my thoughts and feelings, some of you tend to misapprehend and invalidate them in so many ways. Telling me I am not supposed to feel that way because I am ‘rich and famous,'” she said. “I want to be able to do what I want and what makes me happy because I believe that is how life should be. I do not want to compromise my own happiness for other people’s desires. So this time, I am choosing myself.”
Maine took the opportunity to tell the truth that her and Alden are just friends. “We are a love team,” she emphasized. She also apologized to all the people who were bashed because of them. “Kahit sinong madikit sa amin pinagiisipan at pinagsasalitaan ng hindi maganda. Basta hindi naaayon sa kagustuhan ang mga nakikita, nagagalit,” (People would think and say horrible things about anyone who were linked to us. If it’s not what they want, they’ll get mad) she said.
We know how ruthless fans of love teams can get. It can be toxic how they want on-screen romances to be real, and we commend Maine for being brave enough to face this problem head-on. “I am pretty sure majority of you are going to turn your backs on me and probably hate on me. Pero sabi nga nila, speak the truth even if your voice shakes.”
