Liza Soberano Defends Her Role in ‘Bagani’

The Twitterverse is blowing up as netizens share their thoughts on Liza Soberano’s role in Bagani. It started with one girl who said that although she has nothing against Liza and Enrique Gil, they’re not Filipino and shouldn’t be in the film. Others also mentioned that they’re not the right fit for the roles because of their eurocentric looks.

Liza then posted a statement on Twitter saying that they are in fact Filipino and she was raised by Filipinos too.

One netizen pointed out that the youth might be confused of Liza’s portrayal of a “pre-colonial character.”

Some took the opposite route to defend the actress, stating that the story of Bagani is a fantasy and is not based in the pre-colonial period.

Writer for the show Mark Angos also defended the casting, “It is not [pre-colonial]. It is not HISTORICAL.”

However, some netizens still feel like there is lack of representation. They want people to stop praising fair skin and “pointed noses.”
