The Twitterverse is blowing up as netizens share their thoughts on Liza Soberano’s role in Bagani. It started with one girl who said that although she has nothing against Liza and Enrique Gil, they’re not Filipino and shouldn’t be in the film. Others also mentioned that they’re not the right fit for the roles because of their eurocentric looks.
Hello. Eto po yung sinagot niyang tweet. 🙂 Sino ba namang hindi mao-offend pag sinabihan ka ng kapwa Pilipino mong “di naman pinoy” ? pic.twitter.com/iwoKcx8mGA

Liza then posted a statement on Twitter saying that they are in fact Filipino and she was raised by Filipinos too.
And who says were not pinoy? My Father is full filipino. I was raised by two filipinos since the age of 4. I looooove sinigang i think thats as pinoy as pinoy can get.

One netizen pointed out that the youth might be confused of Liza’s portrayal of a “pre-colonial character.”
Hi! I don’t mean to prove the point of that but I’d like to give mine that Liza represents a Filipino from a pre-colonial setting and this may confuse the youth today most esepcially that we hail pointed nose and fair skin. Half-Pinoy siya, yes. Pero yung representation kasi. 🙂

Some took the opposite route to defend the actress, stating that the story of Bagani is a fantasy and is not based in the pre-colonial period.
But it’s not based on the “pre-colonial” period. It’s just a FANTASERYE. Btw siya head writer ng Bagani 🙂 pic.twitter.com/ITmesDBr0m

Writer for the show Mark Angos also defended the casting, “It is not [pre-colonial]. It is not HISTORICAL.”
Bagani is set in a fictional world called Sansinukob- isang alternatibong mundo na may mga elemento ng mitolohiyang Pilipino. It is not PRECOLONIAL. It is not HISTORICAL. Hence it is not a portrayal of sinaunang tao or a particular historical period or event.

However, some netizens still feel like there is lack of representation. They want people to stop praising fair skin and “pointed noses.”
gurl we just need more filo rep as in flat noses and dark filo skin represention the media its not that deep we’re not against you dont take it personally :>
