The University of Santo Tomas has decided to suspend all fraternities and sororities for the school year 2018-2019. According to Inquirer.net, this comes eight months after a law student named Horacio Castillo III died from apparent hazing.
Office of Student Affairs Director Ma. Socorro Guan Hing said in a memo, “The University has decided to suspend the recognition of all fraternities, sororities, or similar organizations effective at the start of A.Y. 2018-2019 until further notice.” She also added, “Accordingly, all fraternities, sororities, or similar organizations are directed to cease and desist from recruting students or engaging in any kind of activities.”
She also encouraged students not to join such groups, “All students likewise are directed not to join fraternities, sororities, or any unrecognized student organization pursuant to the Code of Conduct and Discipline.”
This is a big step forward for the school in protecting its students and we hope that other universities and institutions will follow their lead.
